The NHL off-season has been disappointingly quiet, but ahead of camp, the Flyers and Kraken have made an intriguing minor league trade.
Training camp is just a matter of days away for most NHL teams, and with just days to go, the Seattle Kraken and Philadelphia Flyers have made a surprising minor league trade.
In the deal, the Flyers add a depth piece in former fourth-round pick Tucker Robertson while the Kraken have added undrafted centre Jon-Randall Avon, who primarily played in the AHL with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms a season ago.
The deal was a surprising one, with both teams betting on a change of scenery to benefit their players, as Philadelphia hope the 23-year old can build on a season that saw him score 9 points in 38 games with the Kraken's AHL affiliate the Coachella Valley Firebirds.
There's still plenty of talent there for Robertson, but after bouncing between the ECHL and the AHL a year ago, there's question marks over how consistent he can be at the next level.
As for the Kraken, they get back the formerly undrafted J.R. Avon, who has two years of solid play in the AHL under his belt, with the 22-year old posting 16 goals and 35 points in 125 games played for the Phantoms in that time.
Ultimately, this trade may end up going down as a rather uneventful one, as the odds are stacked against both players to end up making names for themselves in the NHL, but with both having solid upsides, the two teams in this deal are hoping that a change of scenery can help them take the next step in their careers.
