
Thatcher Demko was born on December 8, 1995, in San Diego, California. In 2011-12, Demko played for the U.S. National U17 Team. In three games, he posted a 1.29 goals-against average and a .940 save percentage. He also played in 15 games for the Omaha Lancers in the USHL, going 9-3-0 with a 2.87 goals-against average, a .899 save percentage, and a shutout. In 2012-13, he played for the USNTDP Juniors in the USHL, playing in 19 games, going 14-3-0 with a 2.21 goals-against average, a .902 save percentage, and a shutout.
He would go on to play in the NCAA for the Boston College Eagles. Demko played three seasons for the Eagles. In three seasons, he went on to play in 98 games, going 49-21-10 with a 2.05 goals-against average, a .928 save percentage, and 13 shutouts. Demko made the final four in two of the three seasons at Boston College. He was named a Hobey Baker Finalist in 2016, finishing in the top three. He made 39 appearances, going 27-8-4 with a 1.88 goals-against average, a .935 save percentage, and ten shutouts. The ten shutout is tied for the fourth most in a season All-Time. In 2014-15, he also played for Team USA in the World Juniors, making four appearances, going 1-1-0 with a 1.74 goals-against average, a .934 save percentage, and a shutout.
The Vancouver Canucks selected Demko in the second round of the NHL Draft in 2014. The Boston College star was the second goalie taken in the draft, being drafted after Mason McDonald, who was selected just two picks earlier.
On March 31, 2018, Thatcher Demko made his NHL debut, getting the start against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Demko would stop 26 of the 30 shots he faced en route to his first career win. The left-catching goalie had signed a three-year, entry-level contract with Vancouver in 2016. Demko wouldn’t get his first full season until 2019-20, when he went on to make 27 appearances, going 13-10-2 with a .905 save percentage and a 3.06 goals-against average.
Demko has appeared in 262 games over his nine-year career, all with Vancouver, going 134-99-21 with a .909 save percentage, a 2.81 goals-against average, and ten shutouts. He signed an extension with the Canucks on July 1, 2025, for three-years with an $8.5 million AAV. He won’t be a free agent until the summer of 2029; the extension also included a no-movement clause.
