Quinn Hughes Extension With the Wild: 'Radio Silence Matters'

The conversation in Minnesota seems to have shifted a bit when it comes to a Quinn Hughes extension.What felt like a nearly done deal (although term was a question mark) suddenly feels a little less certain. Reporters are wondering if a lack of movement on a Hughes extension with the Wild is an indication that something might be off.

James Nichols of NJHockeyNow writes:

“Wild GM Bill Guerin was scheduled to meet with Hughes and his representative—Pat Brisson, reportedly too busy to get this done sooner—in Michigan during the final week of July. That meeting allegedly happened already and as of early August, nothing has been announced.” He added, “The radio silence matters.”

What’s Really Going on with Quinn Hughes and the Wild?

The thought just a few weeks ago was that Hughes was open to signing an extension with the Wild. The catch was he only wanted a three-year term to align his deal so that it would end at the same time as his brother Jack. If the brothers could hit free agency at the same time, they could work together to wind up in New Jersey, Minnesota, or somewhere else.

The winds seemed to have shifted. Suddenly it feels a little like an extension in Minny isn’t a given. Maybe Hughes isn’t so sure? The Wild are good, arguably closer to competing for a Stanley Cup than the Devils. But, New Jersey has kept its powder dry for most of the offseason. Nichols notes, “It’s almost like the Devils GM is keeping money available up for something… big.”

Bill Guerin was asked about where talks are at with Hughes:

“I’m not gonna get to far into it, but I have been talking to his camp all along. These things take time, they are big decisions for players and teams, so it’s a process to work through it.”

Hughes is still under contract. He’s got another season remaining with the Wild before Bill Guerin really has to make a decision. But, if Hughes is hinting that he’s not staying, it was already tricky when it was believed the most he would give was three years. Any hint that he’s not even sure about that should introduce the idea of the Wild seeing what the return might be.
