During Alexis Lafreniere’s six seasons with the New York Rangers, he has had some great hot streaks, but he has also had a lot of cold stretches. Last season, he struggled early on but played well on a new line in the second half to end the season on a high note. He will be a key player as the team looks to make the postseason for the first time since 2023-24, and they need him to be more consistent this season.

Inconsistent Play Throughout Career

Expectations were extremely high for Lafreniere when the Rangers drafted him first overall in the 2020 NHL Draft, but he spent most of his first few seasons on the third line and the scarcely used second power-play unit. He did show promise and played better once he was moved onto a line with fellow young forwards Filip Chytil and Kaapo Kakko. He had 91 points in 216 games in his first three seasons.

In 2023-24, Lafreniere was moved to play on a line alongside Artemi Panarin and Vincent Trocheck, and he broke out for 28 goals and 29 assists in 82 games, despite rarely getting power-play opportunities. He did a great job on zone entries and looked confident holding onto the puck and making plays in the offensive zone. He played even better in the postseason and had eight goals and six assists in 15 games, including a highlight-reel goal against the Florida Panthers in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final.

Lafreniere built on his momentum early in the 2024-25 season, as he had nine goals and 11 assists in his first 26 games. His strong play earned him a seven-season, $52.15 million contract extension. However, he struggled offensively for the rest of the season and finished with just 17 goals and 28 assists in 82 games. He also made some frustrating turnovers and defensive mistakes.

This season, Lafreniere slumped offensively early on, but he showed more commitment to backchecking and staying in position defensively. Late in the season, he broke out on the Rangers’ top line with Mika Zibanejad and Gabe Perreault, setting his linemates up and capitalizing on his scoring opportunities. He also did a nice job on the first power play unit and finished the season with 24 goals and 33 assists in 82 games, including nine goals and six assists on the man advantage.

High Expectations This Season

It has taken a long time, but Lafreniere earned a spot on the top line and top power play unit last season, and he should remain in the same roles this season. He is still just 24 years old, but he has developed into a smarter and more responsible player defensively, and now the key will be avoiding the extended slumps that have plagued him.

This offseason, the Rangers added a couple of wingers in Pavel Dorofeyev and Oliver Bjorkstrand, and they traded away Trocheck, a reliable center. The hope is that the new additions, along with the emergence of Perreault, give the team a more balanced lineup. Last season, the entire team struggled early on because they couldn’t score enough to consistently win games even though they were playing well defensively and getting great goaltending. That cannot happen again this season.

The strong play of Lafreniere and his line made a big difference for the Rangers in the second half of last season, and they need him to carry that momentum into this season. If he can avoid big slumps and stay healthy, 65 points is a realistic goal.

Importance This Season

Despite the addition of other forwards, Lafreniere will be an important player for the Rangers. His early slump last season was frustrating, but he was excellent down the stretch, and his improved defensive play made him a very effective player. Though he has had a lot of ups and downs, if he can consistently play the way he did in the second half of 2025-26, he can be one of New York’s best forwards.
