Reaction: Ryan Donato's New Deal Perfect for Player, Blackhawks

Chicago Blackhawks' General Manager Kyle Davidson knocked over an important domino in the course of the 2025 offseason. With questions lingering since the NHL trade deadline about Ryan Donato's future with the organization, his home for the upcoming season was very much in limbo. The pending free agent set a career high in goals (31), assists (31), and points (62) during a largely forgettable season. However, Donato seemed adamant about staying in Chicago and being a part of the future.

The NHL veteran was not traded at the deadline in March, lending some to believe he would remain a Blackhawk for years to come. Although reports indicated both sides had been talking, no one expected Wednesday's news to come when it did.

On Wednesday, the Blackhawks and Donato agreed to a four-year, $16 million deal ($4 million AAV). Expected to be one of the hotter names on the free agency market, Donato remains in Chicago and the Blackhawks have seemingly taken their "big swing" in free agency.

What is important to note about this deal is the perfection it provides for both player and team. Donato's largest contract to date was the two-year, $4 million deal he originally signed with the Blackhawks in 2023. Now, not only does he double his average annual value, but he also receives another four years to remain in Chicago.

Did Donato potentially leave dollars on the table in the present? Possibly. However, guaranteeing four years of term is huge for a player like Donato, who played for four different teams before arriving in Chicago. As people, players appreciate not having to worry about moving their families for awhile.

As for the Blackhawks, $4 million for a player who can play up and down the lineup, score at a respectable clip, and play a gritty game is a steal. Factor in the exponential salary cap growth expected in the coming years and this deal looks even better.

At the end of the day, both sides got what they wanted. Donato received term and a solid, guaranteed payday while the Blackhawks kept a player who is seemingly well liked and a worthy contributor in the building on a reasonable contract. It feels rare to find a deal that makes everybody (including the fanbase) happy, but this one appears to check that box.
