The Detroit Red Wings announced Saturday the team has activated forward James van Riemsdyk from their non-roster. The team has also assigned defenseman Erik Gustafsson to their AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Van Riemsdyk, 36, spent the 2024-25 season with the Columbus Blue Jackets, scoring 16 goals and adding 20 assists for 36 points in 71 regular-season games.

Through 16 NHL seasons, van Riemsdyk has 327 goals and 338 assists for 665 points in 1,082 career regular-season games with the Blue Jackets, Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers and Toronto Maple Leafs.

He’s also played in 82 Stanley Cup Playoff games, scoring 21 goals and 15 assists for 36 points. He was part of the Flyers’ 2010 Stanley Cup Final run.

Van Riemsdyk, taken No. 2 overall in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, saw his best statistical seasons come in Toronto, including two 30-goal and four 50-point campaigns. In 2017-18, he scored a career-high 36 goals.

As for Gustafsson, 33, he scored twice and added 16 assists for 18 points in 60 regular-season games with the Red Wings in 2024-25. He signed a two-year, $4 million contract with Detroit ahead of last season.

Through nine NHL seasons, Gustafsson, a 2012 fourth-round pick, has 47 goals and 193 assists for 240 points in 515 career regular-season games with the Red Wings, Maple Leafs, Flyers, New York Rangers, Washington Capitals, Chicago Blackhawks, Montreal Canadiens and Calgary Flames.

He’s also appeared in 49 Stanley Cup Playoff games, scoring two goals and recording 10 assists for 12 points. He was part of the Canadiens’ 2021 Stanley Cup Final run.

Gustafsson reached career highs in all offensive categories in 2018-19 as a member of the Blackhawks, scoring 17 goals and 43 assists for 60 points.
