Before the NHL Draft and free agency, the Chicago Blackhawks need to name a new head coach. After dismissing Luke Richardson during the 2024-25 season, Anders Sorenson took over as the interim bench boss. Although reports indicated he could be considered for the job, recent reports suggest another name is the next head coach of the team.
For roughly a week or so now, Jeff Blashill has been the only name to make rounds in the rumor mill regarding the Blackhawks' head coach vacancy. Richardson was also the only name to leak publicly when he was first hired, meaning Blashill appears to be the new head coach in Chicago given the pattern.
According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, Blashill should be formally announced either late Wednesday or Thursday before the holiday weekend. In addition, other staff changes are expected as a part of the announcement, which could generate additional excitement in connection with the coaching change.
Word out of Chicago is the #Blackhawks have found their new Head Coach (all signs point to Jeff Blashill, we shall see). An announcement is expected later today or Thursday, and will include additional coaching staff changes.

Blashill served as head coach of the Detroit Red Wings from 2015-16 to 2021-22. Although he only made the playoffs once, Blashill was hired to lead the AHL group who were graduating to the NHL at the time. The former Red Wings bench boss served as head coach of the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins from 2012-13 to 2014-15, winning a Calder Cup and making three total playoff appearances along the way.
Working with young players is the name of the game for Blashill and the Blackhawks are incredibly young right now. With Frank Nazar and Connor Bedard seemingly the current faces of the franchise, a head coach who can put them in positions to succeed and grow is the desire and expectation.
More details will surely come from the announcement and an impending press conference sometime next week, but now it appears there is a clear leader for the Blackhawks going forward.
