Report: Dallas Stars exploring trade for three-time Norris Trophy winner, cost revealed

The Dallas Stars could be positioning themselves for a significant offseason move to address blue line depth with a proven veteran NHL defenseman.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are at a crossroads. Their championship window appears to have closed, yet they remain tied to high-priced veterans determined to compete for another Stanley Cup.

One of those veterans, Erik Karlsson, may not be in Pittsburgh much longer.

According to NHL writer Adam Gretz, the 34-year-old defenseman is back in trade discussions after another productive season. And in Gretz's view, one team stands out as a natural destination, the Dallas Stars.

Why the Dallas Stars could be the ideal fit for Erik Karlsson

In a recent Bleacher Report column, Gretz highlighted Dallas's stacked left side on defense with Miro Heiskanen, Thomas Harley, and Esa Lindell, but a thinner right side following the departure of Chris Tanev.

"They also have one of the NHL's most impressive defensive depth charts down the left side of their defense, and one of the least impressive down the right side. This is a natural match. Especially with Dallas being a bona fide Stanley Cup contender, which should appeal to Karlsson."

Karlsson's 2024-25 numbers, 11 goals, 42 assists in 82 games, may not match his Norris Trophy peak, but they remain elite for his age and would immediately upgrade Dallas's puck-moving ability.

Karlsson's contract is the biggest hurdle. To make the cap work, Dallas might need to move a deal like Ilya Lyubushkin's and include a mid-tier prospect or draft pick. Salary retention from Pittsburgh could be the key to any deal.

For Jim Nill, the decision comes down to whether the offensive upside outweighs the financial gamble.

I believe if the Penguins are willing to retain a portion of the salary, Dallas should take a hard look. The Stars are close to breaking through in the West, and close isn't enough anymore.
