After being placed on leave by the Washington Capitals, reports are circulating that former Calgary Wranglers head coach Mitch Love has been suspended by the NHL for the balance of the season. This is due to an investigation into alleged domestic abuse.

What to know about Mitch Love

The former Calgary Wranglers and Stockton Heat Coach was hired in 2021 and was with the team for two full seasons, winning the Louis A. R. Pieri Memorial Award as the league’s best coach two years in a row.

Following this, he was reportedly on the short list to be the Flames’ next head coach, which he lost out to current head coach Ryan Huska. This caused some concern among Flames fans, who felt that they would lose a talent like Love to another team.

And they did. Love would be hired by the Washington Capitals in 2023 to be one of their assistant coaches. He served in this role until he was suspended by the team pending the outcome of an investigation by the league in September this year.

Reports are that he has been suspended pending a domestic abuse investigation. Interestingly, Seravalli reports that the alleged victim reported this to the teams that were looking to hire him. There is a chance that the Flames were notified of this, and that may have played a role in why he was not hired at the time.

No matter how you may feel about Ryan Huska’s tenure in Calgary, the Flames dodged a bullet by passing on Love when they did.
