Report: Sharks to hire David Quinn as head coach

The San Jose Sharks appear to have found their next leader behind the bench.

According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Sharks are "zeroing in" on David Quinn as the team's new head coach.

Friedman added that the Sharks' job came down to three candidates, Quinn, Pittsburgh Penguins assistant Mike Vellucci, and Toronto Maple Leafs assistant Spencer Carbery.

The hiring of Quinn solidifies leadership at the top of the Sharks' organization. Earlier this month, San Jose hired former NHL veteran Mike Grier as general manager, making him the first Black GM in NHL history.

Quinn, 55, coached the New York Rangers from 2018 to 2021. Over three seasons in New York, Quinn compiled a record of 96-87-25 before being fired after the 2020-21 season.

Most recently, Quinn was the head coach of the United States Men's team for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Quinn began his coaching career leading Boston University from 2013 to 2018. Quinn led Boston University to the NCAA Men's Division I Tournament four times in five years at the helm, including a trip to the National Championship Game in 2015.
