The Toronto Maple Leafs and Nick Robertson have avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.85 million deal that has fans divided.

After days of rising tension and speculation, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Nick Robertson have reached a deal just ahead of their scheduled arbitration hearing.

As reported by Elliotte Friedman, the Leafs signed Robertson to a one-year contract worth $1.85 million, landing almost exactly between the two arbitration filings that were made public Friday.

Robertson, 23, is coming off a season in which he set career highs with 15 goals and 27 points in 69 games. Though he was limited to three playoff appearances, he managed one goal and one assist.

Robertson gets a prove-it contract as questions about his long-term future continue

The one-year deal avoids a messy arbitration hearing, but it also raises questions about how much the Leafs believe in Robertson long-term.

Drafted 53rd overall in 2019, the younger brother of Dallas Stars forward Jason Robertson has battled injuries throughout his career and struggled to lock down a consistent role in Toronto's top nine.

In five NHL seasons, he has posted 32 goals and 56 points in 156 games.

Some fans believe this deal signals a trade could still happen before the season begins, especially if Toronto needs cap space or tries to make a bigger move.

"This is a compromise, but it's hard to see a long-term commitment in a one-year deal," one Leafs fan wrote online.

Another commented:

"He's a great talent, but the Leafs clearly still have doubts."

Personally, I think this is a smart short-term gamble for both sides, but Robertson will need a breakout year if he wants a bigger role or payday.
