According to a team press release, Rodrigo Abols is signing in Switzerland.
The 30-year-old has signed a three-year contract with SC Bern. After reportedly receiving an offer from Orebro HK to lure Abols back to his former club in the SHL, the Latvian instead opted for a change in scenery in Europe.
“Rodrigo is a big, strong two-way center who also brings significant leadership qualities,”, said Sporting Director Martin Plüss, translated.
Abols finished his 2025-26 campaign playing 42 games with the Philadelphia Flyers. He scored three goals for 10 points on a one-year, $800K contract. He spent the early months of 2026 injured with a fractured right ankle. Even when the Flyers were in the playoffs, he was still on injured reserve in May, having not played an NHL game since January 17th of this year against the New York Rangers.
Abols signed an entry-level contract with the Florida Panthers in 2019 as a free agent, having previously been drafted in the 184th overall in the 7th-round of the 2016 NHL Draft by the Vancouver Canucks. He spent time in North America playing for Panthers affiliates in the AHL’s Springfield Thunderbirds and the Greenville Swamp Rabbits of the ECHL on a two-year, $817.5K AAV deal. After those years, Abols signed back in the SHL with Orebro for his second SHL stint. He notably finished the 2021-22 season with a league-best Plus/Minus rating (+26) in his second of three years with the club, first as a captain.
After back-to-back years as a top-3 player on Team Latvia at the World Championships, winning a Bronze Medal in 2023, the Philadelphia Flyers signed the then 28-year-old to a one-year $775K contract. He spent that time in Lehigh Valley with the Phantoms for 47 games while also receiving a 22-game stretch with the Flyers before his 2025-26 season.
