Sabres’ Alex Lyon leaves preseason game with shoulder injury

Lyon allowed one goal on eight shots in 18 minutes of action.

The 33-year-old netminder is coming off a 2025-26 campaign that saw him post a 20-10-4 record with a .907 save percentage (SV%) and 2.74 goals against average (GAA) in 36 regular-season appearances.

He also went 4-3 with a .904 SV% and 2.59 GAA in 10 Stanley Cup Playoff games last spring, helping the Sabres reach the second round of the postseason.

In 149 career games with the Sabres, Red Wings, Florida Panthers, Carolina Hurricanes and Philadelphia Flyers, he’s posted a 71-48-15 record with a .903 SV% and 2.92 GAA.

Lyon has also spent parts of seven seasons in the AHL, where in 202 career regular-season appearances, he’s gone 106-70-27 with a .912 SV% and 2.62 GAA. He helped the Chicago Wolves win the Calder Cup in 2022.

An undrafted free agent, Lyon spent three seasons playing college hockey at Yale University. In 93 career NCAA games, he went 50-29-14 with a .931 SV% and 1.88 GAA. He was awarded the Ken Dryden Award twice, given to the ECAC’s top netminder.  

The Sabres went 50-23-9 for 109 points in 2025-26, finishing first in the Atlantic Division and with the fourth-best record in the NHL. They were eliminated by the Montreal Canadiens in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
