Sabres’ Expectations for the 2026 Playoffs

The Buffalo Sabres are in the playoffs for the first time since 2010-11. Not only did they clinch a playoff spot, but they also won their division for the first time since 2009-10, and for the first time since the new divisions were introduced, they have won the Atlantic Division.

Coming into the season, the Sabres’ expectations were to get into the playoffs by any means necessary. However, now that they have ended the season with 50-plus wins for just the third time in franchise history, expectations have been raised from where they started. But what are those expectations?

Make It Past First Round Of Playoffs

Getting into the playoffs is a great season for the Sabres, but with where they finished in the standings, getting past the first round should be the expectation for them.

The last time the Sabres made it past the first round was the 2006-07 season, where they lost in the Eastern Conference Final to the Ottawa Senators.

They have a 40-goal scorer in Tage Thompson, a potential Norris Trophy candidate in Rasmus Dahlin, and they have gotten production from every player in the lineup. Their depth has been every bit as good, and they have learned to play a true style of hockey that wins games, which is why they reached the 50-win mark this season.

Every player has bought into head coach Lindy Ruff’s system, which emphasizes a defense-minded style that translates to offense. The Sabres’ roster has so much offensive talent that when each and every single player starts to focus on making the right defensive play instead of cheating on offense, it helps them be more productive as a team, and when they get into tight games, they win them more often than not.

The Sabres have all of the tools to win games in the playoffs. Not only winning tight games, but also playing a physical style of game, and this is the best goaltending they have had since 2010-11.

We’ve seen the Sabres play very physical games in their two matchups against the Tampa Bay Lightning over the last five weeks of the regular season. They won both of those games as well, their matchup on March 8, 8-7 in Buffalo, and April 6, 4-2 also in Buffalo.

There is a reason Sabres general manager (GM) Jarmo Kekalainen went out and got tougher at the NHL Trade Deadline. He acquired Logan Stanley, Luke Schenn, and Tanner Pearson from the Winnipeg Jets and Sam Carrick from the New York Rangers. The Sabres prepped for a more physical style of play heading into the playoffs.

As for goaltending, both Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Alex Lyon have been stellar all season. Luukkonen, this season, recorded a 2.52 goals-against average (GAA) and a .910 save percentage (SV%). Lyon has recorded very similar numbers with a 2.77 GAA and a .907 SV%.

Lyon missed the last two weeks due to an injury he suffered in practice and has started skating again. Once he’s healthy, he is expected to back up Luukkonen, who is expected to be the starting goaltender to start the playoffs, rightfully so.

Defense Needs To Continue Their Strong Play

Entering the season, I wrote an article about how the Sabres’ blue line could quietly become one of the best in the league, and they have proved me right. All season, they’ve gotten production from everyone offensively and defensively; it’s been great to watch.

Dahlin drives the bus on the blue line with 74 points in 77 games played and has been mentioned in Norris Trophy conversations, specifically by Hockey Hall of Famer Chris Pronger and Sportsnet analyst Elliotte Friedman.

Mattias Samuelsson, Bowen Byram, and Owen Power have been outstanding as well. Samuelsson had a career season offensively with 41 points (13 goals, 28 assists). Byram has also had a career year with 42 points (11 goals, 31 assists), and Power has 29 points (eight goals, 21 assists).

The Sabres ended the season second in the NHL with 55 goals among defensemen, only behind the Columbus Blue Jackets (58 goals). They also finished third with 212 points among defensemen, only behind the Montreal Canadiens (213) and Colorado Avalanche (233).

The Sabres are going to need their top four to continue producing if they want to win their playoff series vs the Boston Bruins.

Core Players Need To Drive the Bus

The biggest key for the Sabres is getting their core players to drive the bus and lead the team to the Stanley Cup.

On the ice with production from Thompson, Dahlin, Samuelsson, Josh Norris, Josh Doan, Zach Benson, and Alex Tuch; they have to be the players to get the big goal, or big blocked shot, big hit, anything of that nature, and lead the team in any sort of production, and the rest of the team will follow.

Dahlin and Thompson finally get to put their talents on full display in a more magnified national TV setting, getting into the playoffs, and if the Sabres get a lot of production from those two specifically, the Sabres have a really good chance to get into the second round, and at that point, anything past the first round is an exceptional season for the Sabres.

Now off the ice, it’s a little different because there are a lot of players in the locker room who have never played in an NHL playoff game until Sunday night. They have a few players, though, with experience, whether it’s just playing in a playoff round or two, making it to the Stanley Cup Final, or even becoming a champion.

Byram is the only active player on the roster who is a Stanley Cup champion, but Ryan McLeod and Tuch have both been to a Stanley Cup Final. Other players with playoff experience include Zucker, Stanley, Carrick, Pearson, Schenn, Lyon, and Conor Timmins.

The Sabres enter this postseason with real expectations for the first time in over a decade, and there’s no hiding from them now. Everything they’ve built, the core, the culture, the belief, gets tested the moment the puck drops in Buffalo against the Bruins. Game 1 at 7:30 p.m. ET isn’t just the start of a series. It’s the moment we find out what this team truly is.
