It was a busy morning at the Ford Performance Centre, as the Toronto Maple Leafs host the Ottawa Senators in preseason action Tuesday.
Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving addressed reporters to announce that Joseph Woll will be taking a leave of absence from the team to address a personal family matter. Treliving didn’t go into further details but did mention that it’s not a substance abuse issue.
Maple Leafs forward Max Domi will also not be skating Tuesday due to a death in his family. Nicolas Roy skated with the practice group but will not play in Tuesday’s game.

Toronto will be placing a full NHL lineup against Ottawa on Tuesday. Here’s what you need to know from Tuesday’s morning skate:
Easton Cowan will continue his push for a roster spot and skated alongside Steven Lorentz and Scott Laughton at Tuesday’s practice. Cowan drew praise from Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube following Sunday’s 4-3 victory over the Senators, and he’s impressed his teammates throughout camp.
“I felt way more confident,” Cowan said Sunday. “Good summer of training, that’s what you feel out there. It helps you out a lot. Thought I played pretty simple and played my game.”
Cowan is now amid his third training camp with the Maple Leafs, and he’s finding his voice in the room.
“I think he’s just gotten a lot more comfortable with the guys. Definitely talks a little more. That’s a good thing. He’s a little bit more comfortable off the ice, and I’m happy for that,” Matthew Knies said of Cowan.
Cowan will be used in a fourth-line role Tuesday but if he can score and produce against professional-calibre players, it will go a long way in his bid for an opening night spot.
Toronto is running back its usual defence corps, with Ben Danford taking the injured Simon Benoit’s place on the third pair, alongside Oliver Ekman-Larsson. It will be a veteran group in Tuesday’s game and Brandon Carlo spoke about the continuity effect as he continues to build chemistry with Morgan Rielly.
“Mo’s been great,” Carlo said of Rielly. “He’s taken me under his wing throughout last year and then this year as well. Just making sure I’m always in the right spots off the ice, on the ice, on time and what not. So I’m grateful for him. He’s a great team leader.”
Danford isn’t expected to make the Maple Leafs’ roster out of camp, but he’s the best defensive prospect in the organization and will be aided by a veteran in Ekman-Larsson, who was asked to play throughout the lineup last year.
“I thought Ben Danford played a good, solid hockey game,” Berube said of Danford’s game following Sunday’s win. “It is not a flashy game by any means, but it is just about the first pass, defending well, and playing a hard game. He was pretty much mistake-free. It was impressive.”
