The San Jose Sharks have placed defenseman Vincent Iorio on conditional waivers for the purpose of reassigning him to the American Hockey League.

Iorio is now available to be claimed by 30 other teams in the league over the course of the next 24 hours. The only team unable to claim him is the Vegas Golden Knights, as they have reached the maximum of 50 standard player contracts, and would need to move a player to do so. Iorio’s $814,167 cap hit would also not fit on the Edmonton Oilers and Montreal Canadiens current NHL rosters, so they would need to make a corresponding move to claim him.

With the NHL season past the month of October, the waiver priority order is determined by the inverse order of the standings, which means the Vancouver Canucks currently have first say on claiming Iorio, while the Colorado Avalanche are last in that order.

Iorio has already found himself on the waiver wire once this season, as he was placed on waivers only a week into the season by the Washington Capitals, with the Sharks claiming him. He did find himself in the AHL in November on a conditioning stint, but has yet to be placed on the waiver wire again until now.

Iorio finds himself on the waiver wire after being a healthy scratch for the past six games. As he’s struggled to get playing time, the Sharks have likely placed him on waivers to give him more ice time in the AHL, and have decided his NHL value is not high enough that losing him on waivers to another team is an issue for them.

Iorio has gotten into 21 games with the Sharks this season, collecting three assists during that time. He also had seven assists in six games during his conditioning stint with the San Jose Barracuda.
