Detroit finished its season-high six-game road trip in Chicago. The biggest storyline was Patrick Kane entering the game chasing goal number five hundred. The former Blackhawk would need to record a hat-trick to have gotten it done in front of his former team.
While Kane did net a goal early, he wasn’t able to complete the mission. However, Alex DeBrincat, the other former Blackhawk in this game, scored two goals and recorded an assist. DeBrincat is unlikely to make Team U.S.A.; however, his team-leading thirty-seven points continue to make a compelling case. Chicago was missing their superstar forward, Connor Bedard, who went down in a late injury last night in St. Louis.
DeBrincat-Copp-Kane Continue Elite Play: Detroit’s second line was dominant again this game, factoring in on three of the team’s four goals. Patrick Kane finished with a goal and an assist, Copp finished with an assist, and DeBrincat finished with two goals and one assist. The line has a combined thirteen goals for and zero goals against for a +13 with no minus points yet.
John Gibson Settling In: Far from a tough schedule, facing Chicago, Vancouver, and Calgary, Gibson has still been much improved. Gibson has won five straight while also picking up two shutouts in that span. The Red Wings goaltender has posted a save percentage above .915% for his past three games.
Patrick Kane Inches Closer to 500: Obviously, everyone wanted to see Kane record number 500 against his former team. Despite falling short, he still reached 498, meaning he has a chance to do it in front of home fans soon. However, Blackhawks fans might still have appreciated the milestone more.
Blackhawks Struggling Without Bedard: The result was poor for Chicago. Beyond the scoreboard, Chicago was out of this game early, and their offense was so poor that Detroit seemed very comfortable just defending the entire game. Chicago was on the second night of a back-to-back, but even while tired, the team looked like they missed Bedard badly.
Red Wings Play Islanders Tuesday: Detroit will face a very good Islanders team, which has already beaten them handily twice this season. Hopefully, with an improved Gibson and some more offensive confidence, Detroit can bump the slump against the team. Detroit will be back home.
Blackhawks Play Maple Leafs Tuesday: Red Wings fans should be hoping for Chicago to fix their play sooner rather than later, as they play three straight Atlantic Division rivals. Chicago faces off against the ever-inconsistent Maple Leafs in Toronto this Tuesday.
