As the Edmonton Oilers sit just three wins away from their first Stanley Cup in over 30 years, team captain Connor McDavid is putting on an absolute show right now. Fighting for the first Stanley Cup of his decorated hockey career, he’s putting it all on the ice, hoping to avoid the disappointment of last year’s Game 7 loss.
And just as it’s been his whole career, it’s one highlight reel moment after another for the longtime Oiler. Game 2 Friday kicked off with five goals in the first period, and it was wrapped up by another stunner from McDavid, who had some clever stick-handling to sneak through the defence before finding Leon Draisaitl, who buried it.
Here’s another look at that goal if you missed Friday’s barn burner:

After such an impressive effort, even Panthers’ defenceman Aaron Ekblad had to give props to McDavid, joking that he’s really living up to his nickname.
“He’s got multiple options, so that’s the biggest challenge, right?” Ekblad said on Sunday. “You’re trying to block a shot, you’re trying to block a low pass, a backdoor pass, and a walk-on-water toe drag. So, yeah, McJesus.”

McDavid was also asked about the goal during media on Sunday, sitting next to Draisaitl, as a reporter posed the question of what he would tell a kid who wants to learn to make plays like that. As McDavid stumbled trying to answer this perplexing question, Draisaitl interrupted, saying, “You can’t learn that, let me answer that for you,” earning a laugh from the media.
Currently considered among the favourites to win this year’s Conn Smythe Trophy, McDavid certainly hopes it will be in a winning effort this time as opposed to last year. The 28-year-old already has five points through the first two games of the Stanley Cup Final, and leads the league through the postseason with 31 total, including 25 assists.
As the series now shifts to Sunrise, McDavid, Draisaitl, and the Oilers will look to keep up the strong hockey they’ve been playing on the road, as they fight to inch closer to the ultimate prize. With that, it’s only a matter of time before we’re all buzzing about the next great play McDavid impossibly pulls off.
