NEWARK—According to a well-placed source, New Jersey Devils goaltender Jacob Markstrom will be sidelined for “weeks.”

The prognosis is certainly a lot more encouraging than initially anticipated. After the collision on Wednesday night with Boston Bruins forward, Justin Brazeau, Markstrom struggled to stand under his own accord.

Devils backup goaltender Jake Allen knew right away it wasn’t looking good for his goalie partner.

“As soon as I saw that, I knew, and I started getting my stuff on,” Allen explained after capturing the win in relief of Markstrom.

The Devils have seven more games before a two-week break from the 2024-25 regular season, as the 4 Nations Face-Off gets underway in February.

Markstrom’s expected to be one of the three goaltenders who manned the net for Team Sweden, and was perhaps going to be their starting goaltender.

New Jersey Hockey Now is under the impression that Markstrom’s inclusion at the world tournament is now in jeopardy.

The Devils will turn to Allen over the next couple of weeks as their No. 1 netminder.

“I’ve been in this game a long time, sh-t happens,” head coach Sheldon Keefe explained on Wednesday. “You got to keep pressing on. I don’t think too much about it. Next guy up. We have depth in goal, and I have great confidence in Jake [Allen]. He came in and proved that.”

Markstrom is en route to a Vezina caliber season. In 35 starts, the Devils’ goaltender has accrued a 21-9-5 record, .912 SV%, 2.20 GAA, and three shutouts. Markstrom also ranks 10th overall in the NHL with 11.8 goals saved above expected.

Allen claimed his first win on Wednesday since Nov.23rd, although only appeared in seven games in that span.

Allen is 6-8-1 this season with two shutouts, .901 SV%, and 2.66 GAA.

The Devils play Allen’s former club, the Montreal Canadiens next on Saturday at the Bell Centre.
