Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final turned into a disaster for the Edmonton Oilers, and starting netminder Stuart Skinner’s rough outing quickly became a talking point among hockey analysts as well as Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch.
The 6–1 loss to the Florida Panthers saw Knoblauch pull Skinner after allowing five goals on 23 shots, making way for backup Calvin Pickard.
That opened the door for a segment on Wednesday's episode of "Spittin’ Chiclets," where former NHL player and current analyst Paul Bissonnette floated a unique, albeit rather bizarre, theory about the Oilers goalie’s performance.
“You could probably take Skinner’s skate off of his foot if you wanted to when it’s tied for the game,” Bissonnette said.

Is Stuart Skinner tying his skates too loose?! @BizNasty2point0 is starting #SkateGatehttps://t.co/69SF9oHnPN pic.twitter.com/1bQ9CH1rVT
Fellow former NHL player Ryan Whitney wasn’t buying it, although he kept up with the jokes, extending the funny discussion between the two co-hosts.
“Now, we're going with that like now?” Whitney said. “Like, he tied his skates the same way he’s been to two Stanley Cup Finals.
“Don’t think how he ties his skates is like why he plays bad last night.”
Still, Bissonnette doubled down.
“I think that I asked Hank about it, and he seems (to think) it’s a little weird that you can’t really push off that good when it’s like so loose,” Bissonnette said. “I am not like blaming him. I am just saying that he went into that all of a sudden.”
While the skate banter went viral, the Oilers are facing real decisions, starting with who will be in net for Thursday's pivotal game.
Coach Knoblauch didn't commit to a Game 4 starter when addressing the media on Monday.
“No, we haven’t made a decision on goaltending,” Knoblauch said. “And Stu, I don’t think had much chance on many of those goals.
“We’re not playing very well in front of him,” Knoblauch said. “So I think it’s one, just allowing Picks some playing time, but also give Stu some time off.”
