Team Canada: 'Zero Concern' About a Nathan MacKinnon Injury

Nathan MacKinnon and Sam Bennett were both absent from Team Canada’s practice for a maintenance day on Tuesday, but head Jon Cooper has zero concern for their quarter-final availability. Speaking with the media, Cooper squashed any concern for Team Canada fans saying it was nothing more than a rest day.

Head coach Jon Cooper quickly shut down any speculation, calling MacKinnon’s absence a simple maintenance day and stressing there is “zero concern” about his availability. Canada is set to face the winner of Czechia vs. Denmark and Cooper made it clear his star forward will be ready.

MacKinnon was slightly injured in the team’s previous game, which is likely why he’s getting some time off. MacKinnon absorbed several hard hits, including a forearm to the jaw. It’s also why the media speculated that there might have been an issue stemming from that win over France. However, MacKinnon, along with Florida Panthers forward Sam Bennett, was held out strictly for rest and recovery purposes.

Cooper even referred to MacKinnon as “a bull” when asked about his toughness and readiness. It would take a lot more than a few bumps to keep MacKinnon out of a tournament he’s been waiting years to be a part of.

More Good News For Team Canada

There was more good news for Canada. Brad Marchand practiced and is expected to return to the lineup, while Josh Morrissey also looked sharp after his own maintenance check. Marchand said ahead of the game, “To be honest, coming in, I didn’t think I’d be in the lineup. I thought I’d kinda be the extra guy and be a voice. Try to be loud and obnoxious in the room. So, I mean, I’m just so proud and honoured to be part of this group.”

In short, there are no red flags as far as Team Canada is concerned. Most players are healthy, and those who have been sitting are returning. Canada appears on track to enter the quarterfinal at full strength, with MacKinnon ready to lead the charge in the medal round.
