We’re not even 24 hours removed from the Edmonton Oilers being eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and, to no surprise, talk about a potential Connor McDavid trade has already begun.
His short-term extension, a first-round upset exit at the hands of the Anaheim Ducks, and his blunt postgame comments all add up to create a summer full of McDavid trade buzz—unless he shuts it down.
For now, he obviously hasn’t, and because of that, FanDuel has thrown out a mock trade that would send him to San Jose to team up with Team Canada linemate Macklin Celebrini. The proposed deal sees William Eklund, Michael Misa, two first-round picks, and a second-round pick heading back the other way to Edmonton.
“Connor McDavid might NEVER win a Cup in Edmonton. As crazy as it sounds … should the Oilers consider trading him to the Sharks if things go south next year?”

The 29-year-old McDavid is, of course, about to enter the first year of the two-year, $25 million extension he signed with the Oilers in October. He produced six points (one goal, five assists) in six games this postseason following a 138-point (48 goals, 90 assists) regular season.
McDavid is not going to leave Edmonton unless he truly believes there is no chance for them to win in the next two years, at which point he would then ask for a trade.
That feels unlikely given his new extension hasn’t even kicked in yet, though the 2025–26 season went far worse than anyone could have expected, so he’ll surely at least do some thinking in the coming weeks.
If he were ever to leave the Oilers, a young team on the rise like the Sharks—alongside the game’s next superstar, Celebrini—would be one of the more tantalizing landing spots. We’re still a ways away from these conversations becoming reality, but sooner rather than later, we’ll know whether McDavid is fully committed to winning in Edmonton, no matter what.
