The Intern Diaries: Recapping my first week at Oilersnation

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be an intern with Oilersnation? If the answer is yes, then you can follow along with me as I provide weekly updates about what goes on behind the scenes at Nation HQ!

First things first, let me introduce myself. My name is Alicia, and I started here about a week and a half ago. Probably the most important thing you need to know about me is that I do not play when it comes to Zach Hyman. If you happen to know me from my Twitter account, Leashadawg, you probably have already figured this out though.

I am working on achieving my Bachelor of Communications at MacEwan University, majoring in journalism, and this internship is for my degree’s required field placement. Other random things are that I love Noah Kahan and video games, and I have seen Project Hail Mary in theatres four times, soon to be five.

Anyway, enough about me — let’s get into what you are all here for.

Just kidding. Even though his drawing is pretty epic, let’s talk about my first couple of weeks of the internship.

So far, I have been writing and helping Woz out with social media shenanigans. If you want to take a peek at some of the articles I have written so far, you can read them here. As for the social media stuff, I went around the office and asked everyone what year they were born, so I could find out the NHL player that was drafted that year.

Zach Laing has been awesome in helping me with my writing, and he always has extremely helpful feedback for my articles. Being able to work with established writers like him and Michael Menzies has been such a great experience for me, and I feel like I have learned so much already.

Last Thursday, the office had local rapper and influencer Shotty Millz come by for an appearance on The Sauce with Ryder and Lisa, and it was quite an interesting vibe to walk into after he had left. Everyone was talking about him, Padon kept freestyling for the rest of the day, as he was clearly inspired by Shotty’s rhymes. Lisa called him a “marketing mastermind.”

Another little insight into what goes on when the cameras are off is that the guys watch Jeopardy as a pre-game to the Pre-Gaming with Bordzy shows that I am sure you all know and love. If you don’t watch Jeopardy, there is currently a contestant named Jamie Ding who is absolutely cleaning up shop every time. It’s actually insane how electric the Jeopardy watch parties are at HQ.

Not an office thing, but I was lucky enough to go to Game 2 on Wednesday. Even though we lost, it was a lot of fun. It was my first time seeing Hyman score a playoff goal in person, so we take wins wherever we can find them.

Please excuse the typo in the tweet above, my hands were shaking from the excitement of it all.

The weather has been quite the downer, and the Oilers currently being down 2-1 in the series is NOT helping, but it has been so awesome to be able to experience office life at Nation HQ. I want to say that the crew here is so insanely welcoming, and it’s so awesome to see how they all lift each other up. Also, people should give Tyler Yaremchuk more credit for how busy he is all the time with his shows. The guy is a workhorse.

Speaking of Tyler, let me leave you guys with some advice he gave to me. He said, “Some days Chris Pronger is going to yell at you, and some days he isn’t.” Words I will live by for the rest of my life.

Make sure to check in next week to see what else I get up to over here!
