The Utah Mammoth may, or may not, be regretting not trading for Connor Hellebuyck. Only time will tell, but Utah has had awful performances from Karel Vejmelka time and time again.
This time, the Mammoth somehow allowed a weak Flyers offense to put up a number on them, losing in ugly fashion.
The first period went fine for Utah until a hideous turnover led to Matvei Michkov's 10th goal of the season. Luckily, the Mammoth quickly tied the game as Dmitri Simashev netted his third goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1.
The second period wasn't good for Utah, as Travis Konecny scored a goal to make it 2-1. Noah Cates then pushed the lead with another goal, making it 3-1 entering the third period. The third period ended up being an add on period for the Flyers.
The Flyers got two more goals to push the lead to 5-1 in the third. Utah finally got one goal back with a power-play goal from Mikhail Sergachev. Another goal was scored a little bit later for Utah, as Logan Cooley added another power-play goal to make the lead 5-3.
The Flyers eventually killed Utah with an empty net goal to conclude just a terrible performance from Vejmelka and the defense.
Right now, Vejmelka is 6-5-0 with a .872 SV% (42nd) and is allowing 3.31 goals per game (40th). Sebastian Cossa hasn't been much better, meaning that the goalie concerns are growing and there isn't much Utah can do. In terms of a trade, Jordan Binnington might be the best option, but he hasn't been very good for a couple of seasons.
Next, the skidding Mammoth must visit the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night looking to bounce back in a big way.
