The Toronto Maple Leafs made a move intended on beefing up their blueline. We mean in terms of numbers, not size. After being put on waivers by the Edmonton Oilers, defenceman Troy Stecher has been claimed by Toronto. The 5’10” defender will look forward to the opportunity. So, let’s unpack the details.

Stecher has put together a respectable NHL career, over ten seasons. He has 117 career points in 566 games. Furthermore, he has a career average ice time of 17:25. Last year he laced them up for 66 contests in Edmonton. However, this season he had fallen out of rotation. He has only appeared in six games, with an average ice time of 13:37.
The timing of this move is important for Edmonton. They did need a way to free up some salary with Zach Hyman making his return to the lineup. In addition, the Oilers are now just over $200K from the salary cap. Given Stecher’s lack of ice time, their blueline pairing will be able to move forward.
For the Leafs perspective, they definitely could use a change. Currently sitting seventh in the Atlantic Division, and 31st is goals-allowed per game at 3.83. Stecher provides stability and change to the backend. Furthermore, his level of compete might be a great addition to the Leafs current rotation. Look for him to slot into that sixth, or seventh, spot in the depth charts.
One final note on the Leafs, who had already said that goaltender Anthony Stolarz was injured. He was placed on the injured reserve today. Moreover, it was made retroactive to November 11th. Although it is not confirmed, expect Joseph Woll to make his return to the Leafs net tonight.
Both the Oilers and Leafs need a shake-up. For the Oilers, welcoming Hyman is a major addition. Meanwhile for Toronto, Woll coming back and Stecher being add, will all help.
