We officially kick off our top 10 Canucks fights of all time with a brawl between Scott Walker and Dody Wood.

On January 27, 1997, the Canucks welcomed the San Jose Sharks to town, and they got to work early. Bernie Nicolls got the Sharks on the board early with a goal in the first 58 seconds of the game. Shortly after, the rough stuff started to pick up when Tim Hunter and Russ Courtnall took coincidental minors, and then Walker and Wood decided to drop the gloves.

After Kirk McLean covered the puck, Walker and Wood got after one another behind the net. They got off to a quick start, throwing punch after punch right out of the gate, with Walker’s appearing to land the more damaging punches. He really looked to hurt Wood at one point, but that changed once Wood took the fight off the boards.

With Walker’s head down, Wood started to connect some upper-cuts and body shots to Walker. But once Walker stood back up, the two just continued to throw rights. This went on for about five seconds, with both players relentlessly whaling on each other’s faces. After some spinning around, and the punches started slowing down, the two came together and ended the fight.

This fight from Walker sparked something in the Canucks, as Alexander Mogilny equalized the game just 21 seconds later. The two teams would each add another goal in the opening frame, heading into the break with a 2-2 tie. The Sharks would not score again, with Courtnall, Mike Ridley and Pavel Bure adding to the Canucks’ tally.

But the Sharks still made their impression on the game in the third period, more specifically late in the final frame. Marty McSorley received a misconduct at 18:49 of the third period. Then Nicolls and Owen Nolan wanted in on the party, as they both received misconducts at 18:52. But they weren’t done there, as Todd Gill received two misconducts, one for fighting and one for instigating a fight with Chris Joseph at the 18:55 mark.

In the end, the Canucks walked away with a 5-2 victory, with the Sharks winning the penalty minutes battle by a considerable margin, 83-37.

HockeyFights voters gave this fight an 8.1/10 and called this one a draw, earning 52% of the 23 votes. Walker narrowly edged Wood, earning 26% of the votes compared to Wood’s 22%.
