Poirier was claimed off waivers by the Devils from the Stars earlier this season. The Devils acquiring Connor Hellebuyck made Poirier available.

Due to the Devils claiming him off waivers, he would have to be placed back on waivers if they wanted to assign him to Utica in the AHL.

Poirier didn’t play in any game action with the Devils. He did back up a few games. After acquiring Hellebuyck, the option was there to either trade him or place him on waivers.

Now he’s with Washington who has Logan Thompson and Charlie Lindgren. The Capitals had Clay Stephenson claimed off waivers by the Winnipeg Jets earlier this season. If the Capitals want to send him to Hershey they’d have to place him on waivers.

Poirier was one of the top goalies in the AHL last season. He appeared in a league-leading 52 games going 27-19-6, with a 2.61 goals-against average, a .912 save percentage, and two shutouts. He was second in the league in wins, 13th in goals-against average, and eighth in save percentage.
