What If the Jets Traded Connor Hellebuyck?

On the surface, it sounds like nonsense. You don’t trade a Vezina-level goalie like Connor Hellebuyck. You don’t move the backbone of your team. And you definitely don’t do it in a market like Winnipeg, where elite talent isn’t exactly lining up to arrive. But then you look at how this season unfolded.

The Jets fell from the top of the NHL to the basement.

This was a team that went from the best record in the league to scrambling just to stay out of the basement. That’s not a small dip; that’s a full-on identity crisis. And when your best player speaks up at the end of it, people listen. Then Connor Hellebuyck made a series of comments that weren’t exactly subtle. He didn’t torch the place, but he made it clear: what they’re doing right now isn’t enough.

Now, here’s the interesting part — he didn’t sound like a guy begging to get out. He sounded like a guy who still wants to win there. That matters. A lot. Because it suggests this isn’t about running from Winnipeg — it’s about pushing the organization to stop playing it safe. And honestly? He’s not wrong.

The Jets need to stay out of that mushy middle.

The Jets have been flirting with that dreaded “mushy middle” for a while now. Not bad enough to rebuild, not good enough to truly contend. That’s the worst place to live in the NHL. It’s comfortable, but it goes nowhere. So here’s where the uncomfortable question comes in: what if the way out of that middle is through something drastic?

If — and it’s a massive if — the Jets decided to trade Hellebuyck, the return would be enormous. We’re talking about a true franchise-altering haul. Young players, picks, maybe even a cornerstone piece. You don’t often get the chance to deal with a goalie of that calibre. Most teams never do.

Is there a chance the Jets would actually trade Hellebuyck?

Would they actually pull the trigger? Probably not. It’s still a long shot. But just the fact that it’s a conversation tells you everything about where this team is right now.

Either they take Hellebuyck’s message seriously and push their chips in… or they consider a move that resets everything.
