What is Morgan Rielly’s future with the Leafs?

There’s a lot of expectation that things will change this offseason in and around the Toronto Maple Leafs organization, with some questions about which of its core players will remain next fall.

After an abysmal 2025-26 season, in which the team missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in a decade, there’s some wonder if the Maple Leafs would be willing to move on from defenseman Morgan Rielly.

His name was briefly in trade talks leading up to the deadline, and many in Leafs Nation believe the time is now for a change, especially since Rielly’s play has diminished over the past few years.

On Tuesday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, David Pagnotta joined Tyler Yaremchuk and Carter Hutton to discuss what Rielly’s future is with the place he’s called home for over a decade.

David Pagnotta: I think this goes back to last offseason, at the end of their season, when they had their cleanouts. There was a conversation now, obviously it was with Brad Treliving at the time, but there was a conversation about what he wanted to do. Would he be open to potentially waving [his no-move clause]? I don’t think it got too in-depth. I think that happened to a degree. He had what he felt and the team felt was a good offseason, and then it just didn’t translate this year.

I think taking that into account, taking in all the buzz around this club this season, how things have gone, obviously, there’s change coming with whoever is instituted as GM. You’re probably going to be looking at that. His name popped up ahead of the trade deadline, the week of the deadline. There was a team that was engaged in talks with Toronto in trying to make that happen. Now, whether they circle back in the summer with the new guy, we’ll wait and see, but I think there are a few teams that may look to see if the availability is there.

I think there are going to be teams that are curious as to what the Toronto Maple Leafs want to do. I think Morgan’s curious about what may happen as well. I think he was just a little more open than he normally has been about the possibility that, yeah, this could be the end. … So, we’ll see kind of where this goes.
