We’ve reached the eventful final stretch of the NHL season. At this point, something significant is on the line virtually every day, whether it’s a playoff spot or division title to clinch or a major individual milestone. At Daily Faceoff, we’re here to break down exactly what you need to know between now and the end of the season April 17.

So what’s at stake across the three-game slate for Sunday, April 6?

– Is today the day? Alex Ovechkin thrilled the Washington Capitals faithful with a two-goal Friday night, tying Wayne Gretzky for the all-time NHL lead in goals at 894. He has six games left to break the record this season, and his Caps visit the New York Islanders for a hotly anticipated matinee Sunday.

– The Washington Capitals (49-18-9) can clinch the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference if they defeat the New York Islanders in any fashion today.

– The Pittsburgh Penguins (31-34-12) Will be eliminated from the playoffs if (a) they lose to the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday OR the Montreal Canadiens collect a single point or more against the Nashville Predators on Sunday.

– The Buffalo Sabres (33-36-6) also face elimination on Sunday. They’re mathematically out if (a) they lose to the Boston Bruins in regulation AND the Canadiens beat the Predators.
