Why Are the Maple Leafs Low-Balling John Tavares?

John Tavares was supposed to be the easy part. The ex-captain who quietly scored 38 goals last season, never courted controversy, and has made it clear he wants to stay in Toronto. But the Maple Leafs suddenly find themselves playing hardball with a player who’s done everything they’ve asked—and more.

The Maple Leafs and Tavares Are in White-Knuckle Territory

According to rumours, negotiations between the team and Tavares have entered “white-knuckle” territory. And while both sides seem interested in a reunion, the financial gap may be wider than expected. Tavares is reportedly willing to take a hometown discount, but how much is too much? At some point, a “team-friendly” offer becomes disrespectful, especially for someone who’s led by example, handled demotions in stride, and never complained despite the pressure of playing in his hometown.

If the rumours are accurate and the Maple Leafs have offered significantly below market value, it’s fair to ask: why are they squeezing him? This isn’t just any veteran. Tavares was the marquee free-agent signing of a generation. He brought credibility to a young core, wore the ‘C’ with professionalism, and continues to produce at a top-six level. Offering him less than fair value may be a financial decision, but it also sends a message—one that could ripple through the locker room.

Could the Canadiens Become a Player?

The surprise twist? The Montreal Canadiens may be circling. Pierre McGuire has speculated that Tavares could be a strong fit in Montreal, a team needing veteran stability. The idea of Tavares in a Habs jersey sounds far-fetched, almost blasphemous in Toronto. But if the Maple Leafs undervalue him badly enough, it might not be.

Toronto is walking a dangerous line. In trying to future-proof the roster, they risk alienating one of their few anchors. For a team already flirting with change, squeezing Tavares might be a move they end up regretting.
