Will Sheldon Keefe stay on as Devils head coach?

The future of the New Jersey Devils is suddenly in flux, after the hockey club split from general manager Tom Fitzgerald on Monday, leaving plenty of questions throughout the organization.

While filling the general manager role will be the team’s top priority, the move also raises questions about head coach Sheldon Keefe and his future in Newark. Would a new GM instantly bring in a new coach, or does Keefe have a bit of a runway to try to turn things around from behind the bench?

On Tuesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, co-hosts Tyler Yaremchuk and Carter Hutton gauged how the situation may unfold for the Devils.

Tyler Yaremchuk: A question that Devils fans have right now is, what is the future of Sheldon Keefe, the team’s head coach? Let me throw it to you in the form of a fill-in-the-blank…There is a blank percent chance that Sheldon Keefe is the head coach of the New Jersey Devils next season?

Carter Hutton: When I first started thinking about this, I was going to go lower, but I’m going to say 40%. I think there’s a decent chance he stays on as the coach because of the fact that he is there, and now the general manager kind of has that secondary string to pull. So if it happens, if you get to a point where it’s not going well, and maybe you can move off Sheldon Keefe, but to fire him right away, you as the GM are taking accountability: “This is my guy. This is my hire.”I think you give him a little bit of runway to see what he can do with this squad.
