PWHL announces team names, logos for Seattle, Vancouver
PWHL

We know the identities of the two newest teams in women’s hockey.

On Thursday, the Professional Women’s Hockey League announced the team names for the expansion franchises in Seattle and Vancouver. They will be known as the Seattle Torrent and Vancouver Goldeneyes.

A torrent is a strong, and fast-moving stream of water, or some other type of liquid. The PWHL collaborated wth creative free agency Flower Ship to help create the Torrent’s team name and logo.

Seattle forward Hilary Knight expressed her excitement for the team’s new identity.

“I’m so excited for friends, family and fans to learn that we’re officially the Seattle Torrent, and to be a part of it,” Knight said in a release. “Whenever you’re looking at the culture of a group, you want it to be a really strong room — and to pair that with an incredible city with a storied sports legacy and a brand new identity that speaks to all of that, it’s a great recipe for us.”

The Goldeneye name comes from the common goldeneye, a protective bird native to the region.

Vancouver forward Jenn Gardiner is excited by the team’s image and name.

“This identity is a perfect reflection of who we are, where we come from, and that we will be relentless to play against every single night,” Gardiner said. “When I think of the Goldeneyes, I think of the landscape of British Columbia: the mountains, the ocean, and the grit that comes with growing up here. We want our fans to feel the same pride, and to see themselves as part of the Goldeneyes. This is our identity, our province, and our opportunity to show the rest of the league what hockey in BC is all about.”

PWHL Vice President of Brand & Marketing Kanan Bhatt-Shah helped oversee the effort to find the new name, which was rooted in insight and community storytelling unique to the area.

The announcement comes just a couple of weeks after the two teams revealed their jerseys for the 2025-26 season. However, Vancouver and Seattle’s sweaters are fairly basic, just featuring the team’s cities across the front of them, with both having the cream-based road sweaters that have become popular with the Montreal Victoire.

With the new names set to hit the ice this season, both teams have rosters that are going to represent their new homes proudly. Vancouver has a stacked roster with the likes of Sophie Jaques, Claire Thompson, Sarah Nurse and Tereza Vanisova. The team also has a quality veteran goaltending tandem in Emerance Maschmeyer and Kristen Campbell.

As for Seattle, they have a healthy balance of veteran stars and rising youngsters that should make them a playoff contender. With the likes of Knight and Alex Carpenter paired up with Hannah Bilka and Jenna Buglioni, the team in the Emerald City is going to be tough to beat.
