Damian Lillard's return to Blazers can be the spark this player needs

Damian Lillard’s shocking return to Portland isn’t just a storybook reunion — it could be the turning point in Scoot Henderson’s development.

Henderson, drafted No. 3 overall in 2023 to be the next face of the Trail Blazers and heir apparent to Lillard, has struggled under the spotlight left behind by Lillard’s departure. In two seasons, he’s shown flashes of athleticism and court vision, but the consistency, leadership and efficiency haven’t followed. His field-goal percentage has hovered around 40%, and questions about his decision-making and readiness to carry a franchise remain.

Now, Portland has a golden opportunity: pairing Scoot with the same legend he was brought in to replace.

At 35, Lillard will miss the 2025–26 season rehabbing a torn Achilles, but his presence alone — as a mentor, leader and voice — will matter. Few understand the pressure of being “the guy” in Portland like Dame. Over 11 seasons, he took the Blazers to the playoffs eight times, made big shots and gave the city an identity. Henderson hasn’t had that blueprint next to him — until now.

For Henderson, this is a chance to absorb the nuances of being a franchise point guard. Lillard can guide him through film, practices and day-to-day routines. He can teach him how to manage late-game situations, how to elevate teammates and how to lead vocally and silently. Maybe most importantly, Dame can remind him that growth takes time — and belief.

This mentorship also gives Portland a unique bridge between eras. Lillard's deal includes a player option and no-trade clause, meaning he’ll have real stability and influence in this new chapter. The organization is signaling to Henderson that it’s investing not just in his talent, but in giving him the best resource possible to grow into it.

Henderson's ceiling is still high. He’s only 21, and the athletic gifts are there. But a young star often needs a veteran who’s walked the same path to show them how to navigate it. If Lillard can pass the torch while staying involved, Portland may not have to search far for its next franchise legend — he might already be on the roster.

And with Dame guiding the way, Henderson just might find the confidence and direction to take that leap.
