The Pittsburgh Steelers were so convinced that Aaron Rodgers is the right fit for their team that they waited around for months to sign him, but there are still plenty of questions surrounding the team.
Rodgers is learning a third offense in as many seasons. The Steelers believe he will be an upgrade over Russell Wilson, and he also has a top wide receiver to throw to in D.K. Metcalf. Of course, there are still plenty of ways the marriage could go poorly. Here are five of them:
Off-field distractions
Before he signed with the Steelers, Rodgers said he took so long making his decision because he had issues in his personal life that required his attention. He also mentioned that he is in a serious relationship. Rodgers has since confirmed that he is married, though very little is known about his new wife.
While all players have lives outside of football, Rodgers essentially admitted that his focus was elsewhere earlier in the offseason. He insists he is now all-in on the Steelers, but it is wrong to wonder if that could change?
A power struggle
Rodgers has said his respect for Mike Tomlin is a big factor in why he signed with Pittsburgh. Tomlin is known for having close relationships with players and handling big personalities. Still, it is not out of the question that he and Rodgers could clash at some point.
The same goes for offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, who is widely known for his run-first philosophy. There are plenty of reasons to believe Rodgers and Smith will be a good fit for one another, but they could run into some issues if the four-time NFL MVP wants to air it out.
Injury concerns
Rodgers has a heightened risk of injury at this point in his career. That would be said for any 41-year-old quarterback, let alone one who suffered a torn Achilles less than two years ago.
Rodgers is not nearly as mobile as he used to be, which can be a positive and a negative. On one hand, he is unable to make as many plays on the run as he did in his prime. On the other, he should take fewer hits.
Still, Rodgers is at an age where injuries are far more common. Both he and the Steelers will need to be particularly vigilant to mitigate the risk.
A questionable running game
Najee Harris was the Steelers' top running back in each of the past four seasons, but he signed with the Los Angeles Chargers in free agency. That likely leaves Jaylen Warren as Pittsburgh's starter.
If Warren does earn the job, it will be a new role for him. The fourth-year back has mostly been a compliment to Harris, though he has averaged an impressive 4.8 yards per career for his career.
The Steelers need to effectively run the ball to open things up for Rodgers, but there are a lot of questions surrounding their running game.
The magic might be gone
Rodgers led the New York Jets to a 5-12 record last season. He was only one piece of a bad roster, but he used to be the type of player who could win games almost singlehandedly. Those days might be long gone.
The Steelers went 10-7 and made the playoffs with Wilson as their starting QB last season, so they may not need Rodgers to be a hero. They will likely need some vintage Rodgers magic in order to make a deep playoff run, however, and it remains to be seen if the 10-time Pro Bowler can provide it.
