The 16th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners entered Thursday night's clash with No. 2 South Carolina riding a three-game losing streak.
Despite a sloppy 21-turnover performance and a late Gamecocks rally to force overtime, the Sooners (15-4, 3-3 SEC) outscored South Carolina (19-2, 5-1 SEC), 19-7, in the extra frame to pick up the 94-82 upset win, the program's third victory over an Associated Press top-two opponent all-time.
Freshman guard Aaliyah Chavez had the hot hand for most of the night, scoring a team-high 26 points (9-of-19 FG, 5-of-10 3PT) and eight assists.
Chavez scored or assisted on 17 of Oklahoma's 19 points in the extra period, including this dagger to put the Sooners up 14.

With that type of performance, it is easy to see why Chavez is one of only four freshmen in the last 10 seasons (Caitlin Clark, Paige Bueckers, Hannah Hidalgo) to average at least 18 points, four rebounds and four assists, per ESPN Insights.

This was the freshman's eighth game with at least 20 points, including a career-high 33 points against NC State on Dec. 3. All five Oklahoma starters scored in double-figures, but Chavez completely took over in overtime to put the game away.
Senior guard Payton Verhulst (19 points, 8-of-15 FG) and senior center Raegan Beers (18 points, 8-of-9 FG, 14 rebounds) provided a nice balance and made key plays of their own, but Chavez was in a league of her own, especially as South Carolina put the pressure on down the stretch.
Oklahoma led by as many as 14 and dominated on the glass, 54-39, but the sloppiness led to 28 points off turnovers for South Carolina, which helped the cold-shooting Gamecocks (37%) trim the deficit.
The Sooners committed at least 17 turnovers during each game of their three-game losing streak entering the night, so the giveaways continue to be a major issue and one that needs to be corrected moving forward.
However, as long as Chavez plays out of her mind and continues to make clutch plays when the team needs her most, Oklahoma can be dangerous and claw its way back into contention in a stacked SEC.
