The New York Yankees have yet to make a big move in the offseason, and time is running out.
They’ve prioritized bringing Cody Bellinger back. However, after multiple failed attempts, it seems like both parties are still far apart in negotiations.
According to Yankees insider Jon Heyman, that may have forced the team to pivot to Bo Bichette as their new primary target.
“The Yankees and No. 1 target Cody Bellinger have exchanged multiple proposals but haven’t closed the gap quite enough to shut off other possibilities — either for Bellinger or the Yankees, who are now looking more seriously at superstar infielder Bo Bichette,” Heyman wrote.
Back in the day, the Yankees would’ve simply gone after both of them, outbidding their opposition to make sure to get the best players available. That’s no longer the case with this front office.
Bichette is, along with Kyle Tucker, the hottest name in free agency right now, so adding him to the mix might be enough to appease the fans.
Then again, it would also require making some adjustments to the lineup, be it finally moving on from the struggling Anthony Volpe or trading Jazz Chisholm Jr. to make room for the Toronto Blue Jays star.
The Yankees will face some tough competition for the 27-year-old middle infielder, who’s also reportedly drawn interest from the Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox and Blue Jays.
Will they finally make a statement and remind everyone why they were once known as the Evil Empire? We’ll have to wait and see.
