After a red-hot month of August for the San Diego Padres, the calendar turning to September has already brought misfortune in the worst way.
During Monday's 4-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles , San Diego relief pitcher Jason Adam went down with a non-contact injury. Adam stayed down and was eventually carted off the field.
It appeared that the injury was serious, and the severity of it has now been announced.

Padres manager Mike Shildt announced after the game that Adam has been diagnosed with a ruptured quad tendon. Adam is scheduled to undergo further testing, but the fear is that he will be out for the remainder of the season.
It is a brutal blow for San Diego, as Adam has been one of the best relievers not just in the Padres' bullpen, but in all of baseball this season.
Adam has a 1.91 ERA with 70 strikeouts in 65 1/3 innings pitched. He was rightfully selected to his first All-Star Game back in July and was well on the way to the best full season of his career.
If there is a silver lining for the Padres, it would be that they acquired the flame-throwing Mason Miller at the trade deadline, and he can fill in the role that Adam was serving in.
Regardless of the abilities of Miller, it is an unfortunate injury for a San Diego team trying to catch the Los Angeles Dodgers and win the National League West for the first time since 2006.
