It's setting up to be a thrilling weekend at Pinehurst No. 2, as Ludvig Aberg (-5), Bryson DeChambeau (-4), Patrick Cantlay (-4) and Rory McIlroy (-3) are all near the top of the leaderboard after two rounds at the U.S. Open. With the third round upon us, let's target a pair of matchup bets for Moving Day at Pinehurst.
Clark didn't strike the ball well in the first round, but he's trending heading into the weekend. The reigning U.S. Open champion gained 2.48 strokes on approach in the second round, which was the ninth-best mark in the entire field. Iron play will be the name of the game on Saturday when the USGA sets up the golf course to play firmer and faster than it has so far. Clark hits the ball a mile in the air, and he proved he can excel on firm, fast courses at Los Angeles Country Club last year.
It will be much harder for Poston to post (no pun intended) a solid score in the third round. The American is a short hitter who relies on his short game to keep him afloat, but that won't be an easy strategy to execute on Saturday. Clark's putter hasn't even heated up yet, and Moving Day is the perfect time to do just that.
Garcia is executing a perfect U.S. Open game plan right now. The Spaniard has hit 22-of-28 fairways and 28-of-36 greens through two rounds, the third-best mark in the field. He's giving himself a ton of birdie opportunities thanks to his solid ball striking, making easy pars and missing in the right spots to limit big numbers. He just hasn't made enough putts yet.
Henley, on the other hand, is gaining most of his strokes on the green. He ranks No. 1 in the field so far in putts per round (1.57) and No. 10 in strokes gained from putting. That's not sustainable through the weekend, whereas Garcia's consistent ball striking can be.
