Dolphins reportedly plan to use De’Von Achane in multiples roles

Miami Dolphins running back De’Von Achane was well on his way to a 1,000-yard rookie season before injuries knocked him out from early October to mid-November.

The 22-year-old tailback showed flashes of being a do-it-all workhorse, but with a deep RB room that includes Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson Jr. and fourth-round rookie Jaylen Wright, the Dolphins are searching for new ways to get Achane involved in the offense.

“[They have] me lining up at different positions, as far as like receiver, running routes and stuff,” Achane said, via the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. “That’s something that we’re doing different this year, so that’s something that I’ve been doing in the offseason.”

Because of his speed — Achane runs a 4.3 40-yard dash and he accounted for three of the top 18 fastest runs last season, per NextGen Stats, including reaching 21.93 mph on a 67-yard touchdown run in a 70-20 rout of the Denver Broncos in Week 3 — it makes sense that the Dolphins want to get the ball in his hands as frequently as possible.

Last season, running backs accounted for only 19.8% of the team’s targets (109 of 549) and 20% of the team’s receptions (82 of 393), per Pro Football Focus. Achane himself was used as a receiver more than any other Dolphins RB, lining up in the slot 34.7% of the time and out wide 11.2% of the time.

Achane was Miami’s leading receiver among running backs with 27 catches, 37 targets, 197 yards and three touchdowns. His 293 yards after the catch were third-most on the team behind Tyreek Hill (689) and Jaylen Waddle (423).

The only running back with 50 or more carries to be used as a receiver more than Achane last season was Cordarrelle Patterson, formerly of the Atlanta Falcons, now with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
