You never want to lose a player for an extended amount of time and for the New York Yankees — currently holding on to a slim lead in the American League East — losing first baseman Anthony Rizzo is going to hurt.
There's no way to sugarcoat it. It's being reported by Jorge Castillo of ESPN that Rizzo expects to miss at least eight weeks with a fracture in his right forearm.
Rizzo is being placed on the injured list and it's expected that his first few weeks out will include zero baseball activities. If there's any good news here, it's that he isn't expected to need surgery to repair the fracture.
He also seems to be optimistic about his recovery ability.
"I've never gone through this," Rizzo told ESPN. "This is my first fracture, bone break, so I assume I will heal fast with the treatment we have, but we'll see how it feels."
Rizzo injured himself on Sunday against the Boston Red Sox. He was running to first and collided with pitcher Brennan Bernadino, who was covering the bag.

Officially, he suffered a fracture to the radial neck of his right arm.
"It's not ideal, but it's how you look at it, right?" Rizzo told ESPN. "This is part of it. The team's in a great position. Obviously, there's nothing better than playing baseball. It's what we love to do. But now it's just about focusing on getting better and coming back and helping."
Ben Rice, the Yankees' No. 12 prospect, has been called up to replace Rizzo. He hit .275/.393/.532 with 15 home runs and 36 RBI in 60 games this season between Double-A and Triple-A ball.
