Wood Brothers Racing president comments on team's prolonged struggles

It's no secret that the Wood Brothers have struggled in NASCAR Cup Series competition this year. The historic team fields the No. 21 Ford Mustang for driver Harrison Burton, who currently sits 33rd in points of 34 full-time drivers.

Jon Wood, the President of Wood Brothers Racing, was interviewed by NASCAR journalist Kelly Crandall on the "Racing Writer's Podcast" and discussed the team and its current struggles.

Wood was named the president of the team in April, and when asked by Crandall about his new job, he gave an honest answer.

"Well, Sunday's haven't been too terribly fun," Wood said, referring to the team's lackluster performance.

"It's no secret that we're not where we expect to be, or want to be in terms of performance. That's frustrating," he added. "It's disappointing, it's very frustrating. I know we'll get better. There's no question about that. But it's very hard. Our performance is so not good, it's not a laughing matter."

Wood also offered some interesting, albeit vague, insight into the future of Wood Brothers Racing.

"Do I think this is where we'll be this time next year? No. I think we'll be better. But how we get there, we'll have to wait and see. Some of the stuff, we're working on. Some of the stuff, I probably shouldn't talk about. Some of the stuff hasn't yet been realized."

While Wood didn't offer any specifics, it's a possibility that WBR switches drivers after the 2024 season. With four free agents — Chase Briscoe, Josh Berry, Ryan Preece and Noah Gragson — all being available at the end of 2024, and rumors of Justin Haley leaving Rick Ware Racing, the team would be able to choose their driver if Burton were to leave.

The future of the Wood Brothers is up in the air, but one thing seems to be certain — Jon Wood, and the rest of the organization, for that matter, is ready to start running better on Sunday's.
