Euro 2024 best bets: Denmark vs. England and Spain vs. Italy highlight Thursday action

Anyone who watches MLS can tell you that Xherdan Shaqiri is something of a disappointment in the States. He joined the Chicago Fire as one of its most expensive players in history and proceeded to do ... nothing, really, for multiple seasons in a row. He's been so ineffective in MLS in 2024 that the Fire let him join Switzerland's Euro camp early —they figured they weren't missing out on much.

What a difference a new continent makes. Shaqiri took the field against Scotland this morning and slammed an absolute rocket into the back of the net. Why can't we see this Shaqiri stateside?

If the games of June 19 were all about unexpected performances like Shaqiri's, the games of June 20 are all about the weight of expectation. We kick things off at 9 a.m. ET with a sleeper hit of a match between Slovenia and Serbia. While this game isn't likely to impact the knockout rounds, it will mean a lot to both sets of fans back home. Serbians make up the biggest minority in Slovenia; Ljubljana will be hopping for this one.

From there, it's onto two headlining matches: Denmark vs. England at 12 p.m ET and Spain vs. Italy at 3 p.m. ET These were the exact teams —and the exact matchups — in the semifinals of the 2021 Euros three years ago. England and Italy were victorious then but both needed extra time to make it happen.

With so much history riding on both matches, this is easily the biggest day of the Euros thus far. Where are the best bets, though? We think you'll find them here:

Harry Kane, den skæbne. Who stepped up to deliver England's victory against Denmark in the 2021 semifinal? Why, Harry Kane, of course. The English striker earned a penalty, missed the kick and eventually netted the rebound that sealed the game in favor of the Three Lions.

Kane had a quiet opening match against Serbia but he should be raring to go against Denmark's brittle defense. We're backing him as an anytime goal scorer at +137.

England's strong defensive record. While the Three Lions looked a little wobbly against Serbia, they were able to keep a clean sheet at the end of the day. It was their fifth straight clean sheet in the group stages of the Euros and the team will be hungry to go for a sixth. England is the clear favorite against Denmark at -137 to win; bettors can unlock more value by picking England to win with a clean sheet at +150.

Youth at the forefront for Italy and Spain. When Italy beat Spain on penalties during the last Euros, it was the experienced players who got the job done: the now-retired Leonardo Bonucci stepped up to deliver one of the winning shots. This year, it's the kids in the driving seat, with 25-year old Alessandro Bastoni scoring Italy's first goal of the tournament against Albania and 22-year-old Riccardo Calafiori delivering the team's standout defensive performance. It's a similar story for Spain: legend Thiago Alcantara scored a penalty in that 2021 semifinal, but it's 16-year-old Lamine Yamal pushing la furia roja ahead in 2024.

We're keeping a close eye on Italy and Spain's young players for this reason: we think they'll be the difference makers in this closely-run rematch. We're backing Italy's Calafiori to make at least two tackles at +110 and Spain's Yamal to make at least one assist at +550.

It should be a wild day of games, from Slovenia and Serbia's Balkan pride to these crucial rematches of last tournament's semifinals. See you there!
