The Croatians were minutes away from celebrating a 2-1 victory against Albania on Wednesday after getting crushed by Spain in their opening match at Euro 2024.
The Vatreni desperately needed the win to stay afloat in the tournament and give their fearless leader, Luka Modric, the farewell he has rightfully earned.
However, Albania's Klaus Gjasula — who previously scored an own goal to give Croatia the lead in the first place — redeemed himself by netting a late equalizer at 94 minutes and 23 seconds.

By doing so, Gjasula made unique history on two counts. First, he became the only player in history (Euros or World Cup) to come off the bench and score a goal and an own goal in the same match.

Second, at 94 minutes and 23 seconds, the Albanian's goal was the most belated equalizer ever scored in Euros history (excluding extra time).

Furthermore, Gjasula became just the second player to score an own goal and a goal in the same match since Czechoslovakia's Anton Ondrus achieved the feat against the Netherlands in their legendary semifinal clash at Euro 1976. Football historians would remember that Czechoslovakia went on to win that year's European Championship despite Ondrus' miscue that nearly cost his country.
Gjasula's redemptive act on Wednesday meant that the Croatians fell to last place in the Ground B standings behind Spain, Italy and Albania. Modric's team would need to beat Italy next Monday for even the slightest mathematical chance of qualifying for the knockout stages.
