USMNT dominates Bolivia to kick off 2024 Copa America

Takeaways from USMNT's dominant win over Bolivia to kick off 2024 Copa America

The U.S. men's national team kicked off the 2024 Copa America in style, knocking off Bolivia 2-0 in group-stage action. Here are three takeaways from the win.

A ridiculous early goal set the tone

At the three-minute mark of the first half, Christian Pulisic opened the scoring with a goal fit for a video game. Off a set piece, the captain found the top corner of the net with a world-class strike, wowing most of the crowd before they could sit down.

From there, an underdog Bolivia squad had to chase the game. The USMNT wasn't perfect, but after Pulisic's early tally, they didn't need to be.

"All around, a pretty dominant performance," Pulisic told Jenny Taft of Fox Sports. "I think we could have put it away and had a couple more goals there, but definitely a really good start from the guys."

"We should build some confidence from this and feel good, but the games are just gonna get tougher and tougher."

U.S. dominated, but isn't satisfied

The U.S. had the territorial advantage throughout, holding possession for 60.7% of the match. Unsurprisingly, that resulted in an overwhelming shot advantage (8-3), with 20 attempts fired at the Bolivia net in total.

While they only put two in the back of the net on Sunday, it could've been more if not for a few clutch saves from Bolivia goalie Guillermo Viscarra.

After the match, USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter said he was pleased with how his club executed the gameplan against Bolivia but also agreed with Pulisic, believing they left a few goals out there.

"We know the performance was good, but it can improve," USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter said. "I think we can finish some more chances than we did today, but the most important thing for us now is Panama."

The crowd for USMNT Copa America opener was strong despite concerns

Despite an announced attendance of 54,763 at NRG Stadium in Houston, empty seats were clearly visible for the Copa America opener between Mexico and Jamaica on Saturday. While many blamed high ticket prices, the same concerns emerged ahead of U.S./Bolivia on Sunday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

However, a late-arriving crowd eventually filled 47,873 seats. It wasn't a sell-out by any means, but a decent number nonetheless.

The strong showing offers hope for a similar or even bigger crowd for the USMNT's next contest, Thursday against Panama. The game will take place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, which sold out for Argentina vs. Canada on Thursday, drawing an attendance of over 70,000.
