Current, former Arizona State swimmers will contend for medals at Paris Olympics

The Paris Olympics are a little over a month away, and the Games are sure to deliver drama and entertainment as usual.

Arizona State fans will want to watch the swimming events, which begin July 27, as several current and former Sun Devils will feature and likely compete in finals for medals.

Leon Marchand, Team France

The now two-time Olympian is fresh off a Pac-12 championship and an NCAA national championship with the ASU men's team; he reached eight individual titles won and broke several NCAA records in March.

Marchand trained under Michael Phelps' coach, Bob Bowman, at ASU the last three years after cold calling him fresh off appearing at the 2021 Tokyo Games.

At France's Olympic trials, Marchand qualified for Paris in the 400-meter individual medley, an event where he broke Michael Phelps' world record in 2023. He also qualified for the 200-meter breaststroke and butterfly events, as well as the 200-meter individual medley.

Marchand will be a heavy favorite to win gold in his home country.

Regan Smith, Team USA

While not an alum of the university, Smith trained under Bowman at ASU following her decision to leave Stanford and go pro in 2021.

Currently swimming for Longhorn Aquatics at Texas, where Bowman started coaching in April, Smith will help lead a USA squad in the 100 and 200-meter backstroke as well as the 200-meter butterfly events.

Smith broke the world record in the 100-meter backstroke at U.S. Olympic trials in Indianapolis on June 18.

Simone Manuel, Team USA

Also a Stanford alum, Manuel, like Smith, trained in Tempe under Bowman at Sun Devil Aquatics starting in 2022 following a needed mental health break following the Tokyo Olympics.

Manuel will participate in the 50-meter freestyle, also known as the "Splash and Dash," as well as the 4x100-meter freestyle relay in Paris.

Ilya Kharun, Team Canada

Likely the underdog at these games, Kharun qualified in the 100 and 200-meter butterfly events; he holds the Canadian record in the latter.

Kharun, with Marchand, helped ASU win the program's first-ever NCAA title in March, earning an individual title in the 200-meter butterfly event as well.

ASU fans have a lot to root for in Paris and could very well see their swimmers on the podium in multiple events.
