The NHL Draft is behind us, and we should probably take a few minutes together to look through the odds for this year's Calder Trophy (rookie of the year), after Connor Bedard took home the honors last week.
We had a no-doubt-about-it first overall pick in Macklin Celebrini, but the top of the board for this award is a very intriguing one.
Odds are courtesy of DraftKings.
This is a really interesting collection of players. We have Celebrini, this year's first overall pick, and what should excite San Jose Sharks fans: his new teammate Will Smith is also among the Calder Trophy favorites. Smith was last year's fourth overall pick, and it's expected that both join the Sharks together to form quite the tandem on their top line.
Matvei Michkov has Flyers fans excited, as the Russian prospect is considered to be extremely pro-ready and has finally signed his contract with Philadelphia as he prepares to move over to the NHL. Michkov was taken seventh in last season's draft and has been playing professionally since 2021.
Speaking of playing professionally, we have Logan Stankoven, who joined the Dallas Stars in late February and became a force for them in the postseason alongside Wyatt Johnston. More often than not Stankoven was one of the most active players on Dallas, and his future looks bright. Voters might not favor Stankoven given he has the most NHL experience, but that's what could set him up for an extremely productive 2024-25 season.
Then we have Cutter Gauthier, who was drafted by the Flyers two seasons ago and refused to sign a contract with them, which forced them to trade him to the Anaheim Ducks. Gauthier is expected to be on the Ducks roster this fall.
Celebrini is the youngest ever winner of the Hobey Baker Award for the best player in college hockey, recording 32 goals and 32 assists in just 38 games.
He was always going to be the top pick, and similarly to Bedard, that pedigree should go in his favor should he produce in San Jose this season. The Sharks quietly have a pretty exciting young core, and Celebrini will be the centerpiece. Plenty of points are up for grabs, and whichever line the young Canadian finds himself on is sure to be the one that produces the most. We have to back the top pick from this year's draft.
Michkov is the favorite on some books, so he's worth a wager at +500 here on DraftKings. Michkov's appeal is quite clear: the Flyers are in desperate need of some consistent scoring, and Michkov's impact will be easy to quantify once he gets on the ice and produces like we think he will.
The Russian had 41 points in 47 games last year for HC Sochi in the KHL, and the forward figures to slot in as one of Philly's top options right off the bat. We're excited to see what he can do.
