The Miami Heat need to catch up to the Eastern Conference's elite. After making a Cinderella run to the NBA Finals in 2023, the Heat's lack of depth has begun to be exposed. Teams around them have continued to improve.
Pat Riley has stood pat and watched his team get older and more one-dimensional. Jimmy Butler's three-year, $146.4M deal is limiting its ability to navigate the free agency and trade markets.
Caleb Martin seems to be the latest player to leave the franchise. As reported by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski on Saturday, Martin is finalizing a deal with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Since their run to the NBA Finals, the Heat have lost Gabe Vincent, Max Strus, Kyle Lowry and now Martin. So far this summer, they have added Alec Burks to help ease their on-ball creation issues within the second unit. They still need to replace Strus' floor spacing. And now, they're losing a versatile wing from their rotation.
Miami is a big-market team. Its fanbase expects the team to be in contention every season. Yet Riley consistently leans on Erik Spoelstra's exceptional coaching while giving him a limited but gritty roster to work with. The Eastern Conference has gotten deeper over the past two years. Miami can't rely on its hustle mentality to make a deep playoff run.
The Boston Celtics are arguably the best team in the NBA. The New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers have both made big moves in recent months to position themselves near the top of the conference. And then you have the Indiana Pacers, Cleveland Cavaliers and Orlando Magic slowly climbing the ranks.
An aging Butler and Bam Adebayo, who is entering his prime, aren't enough to compete with the talent level of the teams around them. Losing Martin is another sign of Miami's decline via malaise. The Heat must start making moves if they wish to compete.
Otherwise, it's going to be a long and difficult season on South Beach.
