The Chicago White Sox are having one of the worst seasons in baseball history. With their -166-run differential, the White Sox are currently on pace to finish 45-117, just three losses shy of the most single-season losses in the modern era (120).
Sitting on the wrong side of history, general manager Chris Getz is expected to make a plethora of trades as part of an extensive organizational overhaul. Getz has made it clear that the White Sox are open to dealing any of their players for top-ranked prospects. So, while it's tough to be a White Sox fan now, how they approach the trade deadline this year could make it a lot easier to root for them in the future.
Chicago has a number of assets, headed by Luis Robert Jr. and Garrett Crochet, that could help jump-start the rebuild. At least a half-dozen teams have already been linked to Robert in trade rumors, while 15 teams have called to express interest in Crochet. With two of the most sought-after players on the trade market on their roster, the White Sox have already begun scouting the farm systems of potential trade partners.
USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported that the Dodgers have made a feeler offer for the southpaw already, which the White Sox quickly rejected. Rival executives have said that Crochet is going to bring back a haul for Chicago that some contenders may be willing to pay.
Robert, meanwhile, is a high-quality outfielder despite a down season in 2024. The fact that quality outfield help may be hard to come by at this year's deadline should serve to buffer Robert's value against his struggles this season.
Going back to last season, Chicago has dealt several key starters for top-tier prospects, some of whom are already making an impact in the majors. Committed to their rebuild, the White Sox have the power to turn their dreadful season into something positive for the future come the trade deadline on July 30.
