Bertans is a three-point shooting specialist. Throughout his eight-year career in the NBA, 4.7 of his 5.9 shot attempts per game have come from the perimeter. He converts those perimeter jumpers at an above-average 39.6%.
You must be a reliable defender if you want to earn playing time on Tom Thibodeau's Knicks roster. If you can switch multiple positions, play with aggression and show determination when guarding your yard, he will find a spot for you. The problem with most shooting or scoring specialists is that they struggle on the defensive end.
Under Thibodeau, Kemba Walker, Evan Fournier and Bojan Bogdanovic have all struggled to excel. Each of them could provide multiple wrinkles on the Knicks offense. None of them could contribute on the defensive end, at least not to the level Thibodeau expects from his players. Bertans would likely become the fourth name on that list. While his scoring ability is unquestionable, his defense leaves a lot to be desired.
Bertans will likely receive offers from elsewhere in the NBA. While the Knicks can offer him the chance to contend, a spell with the franchise could hurt his value in the league. Bertans should look elsewhere and land on a roster that will use his talents without punishing him for his flaws.
Shooting specialists struggle under Thibodeau. It doesn't make sense for Bertans to take the risk. The Knicks may need to look elsewhere if they're truly attempting to improve the second unit.
